Trip to DC

We have had lots of trips lately but they have all been so much fun!  This past weekend we drove up to DC to spend some time with Jeff's other buddy, Jeremy.  The guys wanted to go to a Dave Matthews concert so we decided to make a trip of it and go to the zoo as well.  We all had so much fun! (I needed to do a long run and had a blast running around all the monuments in DC...what a great place to run!)
The kids Saturday morning...drinking milk and watching cable TV...life was good.

The entrance to the free DC zoo.

Coley really liked the tigers.  Since we went early in the morning all the animals were very active.

Nate's favorite, the lions.

Wow they have big paws.

Aw, but Daddy has a bigger hand...just no claws.

Coley's was a little smaller.

This was cool.  You moved the red plate over it and you could see the inside organs of the different cats.  Nate enjoyed moving the plate, not sure he really knew what it was showing.

We spent forever watching the orangutans.  They were so active and fun to watch.  Both kids sat nicely next to each other and just kept pointing and talking about them.  The orangutans were tearing apart a phone book and at one point one of them took a page over to the zoo keeper.  I told Nate that the orangutan wanted her to call someone for a date that night.  Well, that is one thing Nate keeps mentioning...that the zoo keeper wouldn't call to get the orangutan a date!  I forget he is only 3 and very literal.

At 11 they let the orangutans out and let them climb from on area to another via these high ropes.  So much fun to watch!

We also watched them feed the Gorillas.  The noises coming from the cages before they let them out was scary.  Also, the baby tried to take this big silverback's food...it was very scary to watch this guy in action.  Of course that night Nate couldn't sleep because all he could think about was that big scary mean daddy gorilla!

The only way one should see the zoo.  Next time they get to push me!

And the elephants.

Coley loves the animals.  I think she might be a vet when she grows up.  I took Nate to a zoo for the first time when he was about Coley's age and he spent more time looking at the lawn mower than the animals.  Coley could watch the animals forever.

Our wonderful hosts!!  Mr. and Mrs. Smith

We didn't get to see the panda but we did see his statue.
